We took a train from Sorrento to Pompeii for a day trip...and WHAT A CITY IT WAS!!! Might have been one of our favorite tours of our babymoon trip. It is a fascinating city...destroyed by Mt Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD leaving the entire city covered in ash. From beginning to end of the eruption it just took 24 hours...so now the ruins of this city are still pretty intact which was unbelievable to see...paintings still on walls of homes, plumbing, cobblestone roads, kitchen tiling still in place...such a cool place to experience!
Sean in the heart of the city of Pompeii with Mt Vesuvius erie presence looming in the background.
Here was one of the mummified people of Pompeii's volcano eruption. It took the whole city by surprise and they were suffocated by the ash that fell. Around 20,000 people dies in the eruption...about 6,000 escaped.
This was a doormat on the front of one of the Pompeii homes made of tile that reads "Beware of Dog". Look how perfectly intact it still is sooo many years later.
